Female Futsal Fundraiser aims to set new record!
BIRMINGHAM based cricket player and coach Salma Bi is organising a female futsal fundraiser to raise money for the first ever national women’s Ten10 indoor cricket tournament at Edgbaston on April 28.
The fundraiser at Birmingham International Futsal Arena on March 10 will see around 40 ladies attempt to set a new record of 10 hours non-stop playing from9am until 7pm. The event will also highlight the contribution of women in sport in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8.
Salma hopes to raise around £5,000 to host the Ten10 cricket tournament, which will invite girls aged 14 and over to participate in a six-a-side World Cup-style competition. Part of the money raised will be donated to the National Autistic Society, a charity close to Salma, whose younger niece is wheelchair bound.
Salma is best known for her cricketing achievements but is also a very keen futsal player and captains the Great White Sharks, the first female Asian-Muslim team to compete in the Birmingham Women’s Futsal League.
The multi-talented 25 year old was the first Asian female ever to be chosen to represent Worcestershire CC, and currently plays for Five Ways Old Edwardian’s and Wall cricket clubs, as well as being a level one umpire and level two coach.
The events are the first of many initiatives being organised by Salma and her new coaching organisaton, Believe in MAD (Making A Difference), which aims to raise awareness of both girls and women’s cricket and disability cricket.
