Girl boxer Ambreen Sadiq going against all odds

18 January 2010 4,363 views 4 Comments

YOUR race, religion, class, gender or age – which identity is more likely to put you at a disadvantage? This is the question that has caused much debate and controversy over the past week. It follows a speech by communities secretary Mr Denham, who claimed that racial discrimination was no longer the only cause of disadvantage and it was now more linked to poverty and social class. But a documentary on channel 4 this Friday is about to add some more fuel to fire and shake up the debate by questioning whether the glass ceiling really does exist. It tells the story of 15 year-old Ambreen Sadiq, the first Muslim female boxer in the country, who is going against all odds to pursue her dream of fighting in the Olympics. It is no surprise she has been short-listed for the Junior Sports Personality of the Year Female title at this years Change4Life British Asian Sports Awards on February 6. Competing in a male-dominated sport, bound my religious constraints, younger than most in the game, and from a culture that has only just begun to take sport seriously, Ambreen is smashing down more than just one barrier. Will any of these factors stop her from rising up the ranks? Or will a combination of talent, determination and a little bit of luck see her through to the top? Follow her story as she prepares for the rematch of her championship bout against rival boxer, Bobbi Clarke in the special documentary Ambreen:The Girl Boxer this Friday (22) at 7:30pm on Channel 4.
